Obituary

Obituary for Barbara Stephens

Barbara J. Stephens (Schaul) Oct. 6, 1937 – May 27, 2020

Barbara Jean Stephens passed away of natural causes May 27, 2020 following a long decline. Born to Charles and Bertha Schaul, at home on Ford Street, in Golden, CO, Barbara was a lifelong resident of Jefferson County. She worked all her life and held many jobs over the years, including Steve’s Steakhouse, Jolly Rancher Candies and Yellow Front stores. She had retired from her business of providing loving in-home childcare for more than 20 years and has many “adopted” grandchildren throughout the area to this day. Her tight foursome of girlfriends from Mitchell Elementary and Golden High School still gathered together for casino trips, vacations and lots of laughter-filled meals. They are warmly referred to as the “Ya-Yas” by their families. Barb married Jack Stephens, a local musician, and the longtime couple had three children together prior to divorcing.

She was a good cook, played a mean game of poker and loved to fish, read past her bedtime and reveled in the scent of fresh lilacs. She was totally committed to honoring the memory of her only daughter who passed in 1981.

Barb is preceded in death by her daughter, Barbalee Elgin; her granddaughter, Rebecca Carpenter; her parents; and her half-sister, Maxine Webb.
She is survived by her two sons; Mark of Lakewood and Charles of San Diego; two grandchildren, Josh and Jennifer; and five great-grandchildren. Many loving relatives and dear friends also share in the family’s loss. Services will be held at a later date: to be notified use the link below.
