Obituary for Francis John Smit

Francis (Frank) Smit was born June 29, 1933 in Platte, South Dakota. He was the 4th of 5 children born to John and Swantie (Mos) Smit. Most of Frank’s surviving relatives remain in South Dakota. Frank will be interred in Edgerton Cemetery, Platte, SD. He passed on Sunday, March 22, in Westminster, CO at the age of 86.

Frank obtained his Bachelor’s degree from South Dakota School of Mines and graduated from his Master’s program at Penn State.

Frank worked in the mining and research industry for well over 30 years. He started his career at Kennicott Copper Mine in Salt Lake City, Utah. Eventually, Frank moved to Colorado and ended his career with AMAX in Golden, CO.

Frank married Jettabee (Jerry) Elkins on October 19, 1962 in Salt Lake City, UT. Frank and Jerry have 3 children; Lesli Ann Eiland, John Francis Smit and Terri Lynn Vacik

Frank has 5 grandchildren:

Daughter Lesli’s children Michael Benjamin Eiland (deceased) and Katherine Michelle Hamlet,

Daughter Terri’s children: Denis Benjamin Shipman and Arnold John Vacik,

Son John’s child: Marcine Jane Smit.

Frank and Jerry have been faithful members of Evergreen Methodist Church for many years.

Jerry is living in Westminister, CO.

Everyone who knew Frank will remember him by his kind and gentle spirit.

His memorial service can be viewed at www.evergreenumc.org/videos.
