Obituary

Obituary for Genevieve Marnette Godkin

Genevieve Godkin, more commonly known as Ginny or Lani, died peacefully in her sleep on May 4, 2021. She was many things to many people: caring wife, loving mother, doting grandmother, loyal sister and fun-loving friend. Her passing will leave a noticeable void.

Ginny was born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 5, 1937; she had just recently celebrated her 84th birthday. When she was born, she so closely resembled a drawing on the sheet music to “Sweet Leilani,” a huge hit in 1937, that it became a lifelong family nickname. She graduated from Technical High School and shortly thereafter married the love her life, James Godkin. They were married for almost 64 years and had three children: Jimmy, Marty and Rebecca.

For the past 45 years, Ginny called Golden, Colorado home. She filled her free time cheering on the Broncos, the Avalanche and the Rockies and it’s probably not an exaggeration to say that the number of bridge hands she played numbered into the tens of thousands. Ginny also had a knack for telling stories that ended in peals of laughter. She will be sorely missed.

Ginny is predeceased by her husband and Jimmy. She is survived by Marty (Becky) and Rebecca (John), daughter-in-law Deborah, and grandchildren James (Maris), Ashley, Parker, and Preston.

Ginny’s remains will be cremated, combined with her late husband’s, and spread at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to her favorite charity, Ronald McDonald House.
