Martha was a favorite friend of mine from the time I met her in 1968 at UNC. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a spunky perspective on life. Her friends could rely on her for a good time. She was always available for long conversations and she was well versed on numerous topics. She was insightful and she definitely had her opinions, especially regarding politics. I valued those opinions. Her courage as she faced the challenges of MS is to be admired. I never once heard her complain or feel sorry for herself. She was a valiant fighter. I'm torn between grief that she is gone and relief that she doesn't have to suffer anymore. Goodbye sweet friend, and I look forward to the day we will all be reunited.

Martha and I have been friends since 1954 sharing many memories such as slumber parties, school activities, class reunions, graduation from high school, raising children, marriages, and visits over the years. Her Dad was Superintendent of Schools in Jefferson County and while we were growing up allowed us to have many parties and get together a at their home. Martha will be greatly missed as she had such a warm invigorating personality and a great sense of humor. Condolences to her family and many friends. Rosie Sevilla Alexander, Hobe Sound, Florida.

Martha was a special person who created smiles and positivity wherever she was. She was also a loyal friend to many. I was fortunate to know her since 1956. We have kept in touch and found much support as we married, had children, gone to school, and found our way in careers. So happy that Martha was able to travel to Greece many times, enjoying the history and culture of a country she so loved. My heart is sad that she is no longer with us but I am richer for having known her so many years. My deepest condolences to the family.
