Obituary

Mary Margaret (Marge) Mahoney

March 19, 1936 – April 17, 2020

Mary Margaret (Marge) passed away peacefully on April 17th, 2020 in Denver, CO five years to the day from the passing of her husband William. They had been married for 59 years.

Marge was born in Erlanger, Ky. to Elvira Elizabeth (Steggeman) and Alfred Edward Koop. There she resided until her marriage in 1956 to William Terry Mahoney. Prior to her marriage to “Bill” she graduated from St. Henry’s High School in Erlanger. They were married in Texas at Reese Air Force Base while Bill was in flight school with the United States Air Force. Together they spent (11) years traveling the world and beginning their family having lived in many places including several years on the Island of Crete in 1959-’60. They cherished their many friends that they met during those years in service to the United States. For many years, while Bill was flying for American Airlines, the family lived in Elk Grove Village, IL and upon retirement shared time between there and a home they enjoyed Sun Lakes AZ. Many places, many friends to be enjoyed.

Marge was also very active on the Community Services Board in Elk Grove for a number of years and firmly believed that a single individual was able to make a difference in the lives of others. The key was to be willing to speak up on behalf of others.

Marge also treasured the many friends that she grew up with and later met as she traveled around the world. She was an avid letter writer enjoying catching up with people. Christmas card writing, up until her final years, was something she started early in the fall and spent many hours writing and exchanging cards and photos to renew these relationships annually. Marge loved getting together with these friends and reliving stories and events from the past. She loved to laugh with those to whom she would connect and she connected with many people.

Marge is survived by four of her six children, Donald (SLC, UT), Michael (Colleyville, TX), Susan (Northern Ireland) and Julie (Denver, CO). She was preceded in death by her son Stephen and daughter Margaret Mary (Peggy). The recent loss of Peggy was especially difficult for Mom as her memory loss caused her to relive that event too often. She is also survived by (11) grandchildren and (2) great-grandkids. Mary Margaret was also sister to Richard (deceased), Eugene (deceased) and is survived by Don and sisters Judy and Ruth Ann.

Due to the recent Covid-19 effects upon travel and gathering a future event will be scheduled in Kentucky when the family is able to again travel to gather and exchange memories from knowing Marge. She will be interred with Bill and her son Stephen at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, KY.
