Obituary for Ralph Elton Donahue

Ralph Elton Donahue
07/02/1935 – 08/31/2019
“And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count; it's the life in your years.”
Abraham Lincoln.

Ralph was born on July 2, 1935 to James and Edna Donahue in Denver, Colorado. He married Carol Jean Luckett on October 3, 1953. During their almost 66 years of marriage, they built their family starting in 1956 with Kent Duane, in 1958 with Kevin Wayne and Carla Brooke in 1963. Their family continued to grow with seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Ralph spent his life teaching and playing music. He had an amazing musical talent and was a music teacher at fifteen where he met the love of his life Carol. He was part of many live performances including in radio and television. He performed in the West Side Show Wagon, was one of the original KLAK radio Ranch Hands/disc jockeys and a member of the Bloomin’ Idiots band. He played multiple instruments including electric and acoustic guitar, standup bass and steel guitar.
Ralph worked in many professions over his lifetime. He supported his family in the early years working multiple jobs. He built a career as a dispensing optician for Western Optical where he and Carol worked together until they retired in 2002. After retirement, he worked part-time for several years at Vision Care Specialists. He always made sure to help those who may not have had the means to get good eyewear. He also adjusted the nun’s glasses at St. Anthony’s hospital and to this day, Ralph is asked for by patients he hasn’t seen since his retirement. He was most definitely a master of his craft.
Ralph had a tremendous sense of humor and laughter was always his best medicine. He was cracking jokes with us up until the end. He left a legacy of love for family, friends and was truly an example of what makes a good man. His smile was always welcoming to those he knew and strangers alike. His compassion, generosity and faith were all-encompassing. He was a member of the Applewood Valley United Methodist Church for several years and a Master Mason at the Paul Revere Lodge since 1965.
Ralph passed away on August 31st at home surrounded by family. He was pre-deceased by his parents James and Edna Donahue, brother Jim (Sam) Donahue, sister Frances Flagg and son Kent Donahue. He is survived by his wife Carol, son Kevin (Kathy), daughter Carla Elliott (Scott), daughter-in-law Jaime, his grandchildren, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held at Applewood Valley United Methodist Church at 2035 Ellis St., Golden, CO on Saturday, September 14th, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. A lunch reception will follow the service in the lower level of the church.
