Obituary

Obituary for Shirley Louise Nielsen

Shirley Louise Nielsen

July 28, 1928 - February 23, 2021

Shirley passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 in Broomfield, CO at the age of 92. She was surrounded by loving family and amazing caretakers.

Shirley was born on July 28, 1928 in Hollidaysburg, PA to the late A. Robb and Helen (Lamison) Zimmers. She grew up in Altoona, PA. Shirley was a graduate of the School of Nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and practiced nursing for several years. On April 12, 1952 she married the love of her life, F. Kenneth Nielsen and celebrated 62 years of marriage before Ken’s passing in 2014. She is survived by her loving daughter, Gretchen Nielsen Losty and devoted son-in-law Edward Losty of Arvada, CO; her five grandchildren whom she referred to as her “angels” Peter, Kyle (Angela), Garrett, Bryce and Jillian and her precious only great grandson, Thatcher Nielsen Losty. Shirley is also survived by her niece Donna Shippen and her nephew David Gilliland. She was preceded in death by her only son, Peter Eric at the age of 6 in 1967, her sister, Dorothy (Zimmers) McKillip, her husband, F. Kenneth Nielsen and sister-in-law, Dorothy Gilliland.

Shirley and Ken showed their dedication to Ken’s career with the Pennsylvania Railroad as they moved 13 times before settling in King of Prussia, PA in 1970, where they resided for 44 years until Ken’s passing. Shirley moved to Williamsburg, VA to be near her daughter and grandchildren and then to Broomfield, CO in 2015, where she had many dear friends & caretakers.

Shirley was an avid bridge player, baker, gardner and very involved nanny. Her grandchildren were her life! Shirley‘s fierce love of family and never wanting to say “goodbye” will live on in her devoted grandchildren by enjoying the simple things in life and paying it forward. Shirley will always be remembered for her love and devotion to family, her consistent serving and listening to others, holiday sweaters and jewelry, celebration of holidays~purchasing and wrapping gifts, but most of all her kindness. In remembrance of her sweet soul please do a random act of kindness!

Altoona, PA was always close to Shirley’s heart. She will be buried near her parents, son and husband in Alto-Reste Park, Altoona, PA at a later date due to Covid-19. Interment will be private at the request of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 132 E. Valley Forge Road, King of Prussia, PA 19406 where Shirley & Ken were committed members for nearly 50 years.
